All the Mate 20 series smartphones are expected to run on Google's latest Android 9.0 Pie operating system out of the box. Huawei now expects P20 series shipments to reach around 16 million by the end of the year.

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite, on the other hand, features a 6.3-inch 1080x2340px IPS LCD, a Kirin 710 chipset, 6GB of RAM, a 3,650mAh battery and four cameras - a 20MP f/1.8 + 2MP main camera and a 24MP + 2MP selfie cameras. Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu announced the chipset, based on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturer Company's (TSMC) 7nm process, in his keynote address on the opening day of the IFA 2018 here. "Last year, we showed the world the potential of On-Device AI with the Kirin 970, and this year, we've designed an all-round powerhouse that not only features outstanding AI capabilities, but also brings cutting-edge raw performance to consumers". According to the smartphone maker, the new GPU outperforms the previous one by 46% along with 178% more power efficient which is phenomenal. This is the world's first 7nm processor. Also Huawei Kirin 980 compared with competing Snapdragon SoC 845, claiming the superiority of their own decisions on gaming performance by 22% reduced by 32% energy consumption.

Kirin 980 consists of an 8-core CPU which has two high powered Cortex-A76 cores, two power efficient Cortex-A76 cores and four low power Cortex A55 cores. To take full advantage of this unique configuration, HUAWEI developed an innovative Kirin CPU subsystem with Flex-Scheduling technology that flexibly allocates the right cores to the right tasks. Mali-G76 also features clock boosting technology that utilizes AI to intelligently identify gaming workloads and adjust resource allocation for optimal gaming performance.

That's not it! The Kirin 980 is also the first in the world to feature dual NPUs (Neural Network Processing Units). It brings support for dual NPU chipset which goes by the moniker "Dual-Brain Power". Huawei's example was image recognition.

With so many credentials besides its name, Kirin 980 chipset will surely be Huawei's first choice for its future flagships. The new ISP also received improvements as part of the support for HDR (contrast control for selecting objects in different image regions) and motion tracking (recognition accuracy increased to 97,4%).

But why exactly is the Kirin 980 so interesting? That's why Huawei's new Camera ISP, for which Huawei is claiming a 46% improvement in performance, is important.

In addition, the Kirin 980 has a new way of implementing what's known in smartphone processor circles as "big little" processing.
