NBC threatened to ruin Ronan Farrow if he didn’t stop reporting on Harvey Weinstein: report

A former NBC producer who worked with journalist Ronan Farrow on the reporter's exposé of sexual assault and misconduct allegations surrounding Harvey Weinstein is accusing NBC News executives of resisting the pair's efforts to report the story.

Farrow ended up taking the story to the New Yorker, for which he won a Pulitzer Prize, and Weinstein is now facing criminal charges, but McHugh said NBC impeded reporting he was doing with Farrow in "a massive breach of journalistic integrity".

According to The Daily Beast, "multiple sources familiar with the matter" said one such internal pressure came from NBC News General Counsel Susan Weiner, who, those sources said, made repeated calls to Farrow, threatening to smear his reputation if he continued with his story.

In a statement to Mediaite, an NBC News spokesperson added, "The assertion that NBC News tried to kill the Weinstein story while Ronan Farrow was at NBC News, or even more ludicrously, after he left NBC News, is an outright lie". "There's no truth to that all". HuffPost reported past year that McGowan "withdrew her permission for NBC News to use the footage after she'd received legal threats from Weinstein". Farrow and McHugh declined through his lawyer to comment for the Daily Beast article, which also alleged that Farrow suspected that Oppenheim had would wanted to dissuade Farrow from pursuing the Weinstein story because the executive harbored dreams of becoming a hollywood screenwriter. McHugh quit his job with NBC's investigative unit earlier this month, telling The New York Times that he had delayed his departure from the network out of fear that NBC could retaliate against him. I knew that Weinstein was calling NBC executives directly.

"We repeatedly made clear to Ronan and Rich McHugh the standard for publication is we needed at least one credible on-the-record victim or witness of misconduct", Oppenheim said.

In each of these instances, rather than bring in outside investigators to fully vet the scandal (as Fox News has done), NBC News chose to investigate NBC News, and each and every time NBC News was able to report that it found no wrongdoing at NBC News. Farrow reached out to Auletta after encountering road blocks at NBC, which led to the stories landing in the New Yorker. Andrew Lack remains the chairman of NBC News and MSNBC. He'll present his own account in his book, "Catch and Kill", which has yet to be published. "And immediately the New Yorker recognized that, and it is not accurate to say that it was not reportable".

McHugh did not say which NBC officials were involved, but he strongly implied that the network was "killing the Harvey Weinstein story", he told the Times.

Farrow ultimately left NBC because of its continued reluctance to air the story.
