Why a Harvard professor is calling coconut oil "pure poison"

Harvard professor slams coconut oil as ‘pure poison

She added that coconut oil is actually more unhealthy than traditional lard.

In the speech given at the University of Freiburg, Dr Michels stated that coconut oil is "one of the worst foods you can eat" due to the damaging effect the saturated fatty acids in the coconut oil can have on your body.

Among other things, she told her audience that "coconut oil is pure poison, ' and 'it is one of the worst foods you can eat", according to a translation by Business Insider.

Michels claims lard is actually healthier, as coconut oil contains more than twice the amount of saturated fat found in lard.

With so many oils to choose from, health experts recommend reading the labels to make sure your meal is prepared as healthy as possible. "Coconut oil is rich in saturated fat, which for years has been demonized in the nutrition media".

The American Heart Association report noted that replacing saturated fats, including coconut oil, butter, beef fat or palm oil with healthier, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats like olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil, corn oil, and sunflower oil lowers cardiovascular disease risk by about 30 percent - as much as cholesterol-lowering statin drugs.

Some fans even believe that a spoonful of coconut oil can prevent gingivitis and sinusitis, which is why they spend 10 minutes a day gargling with it - a habit known as "oil pulling".

She says most of the beneficial nutrients in them can be easily found in more common foods like carrots, cherries, and apricots.

Past year the AHA revised its stance on the oil and recommended that consumers stay away from the type of fatty acids it contains - mostly saturated fat. Because of these experiments, the organization recommends that people keep their daily calories from saturated fats at 5 percent to 6 percent of their daily calories. Each tablespoon of coconut oil provides 130 calories.

'We are well and sufficiently supplied, ' she said.

As it turns out, Michels' assessment of coconut oil is a lot closer to what the scientific evidence has to say about the fat than what acolytes claim - though "poison" may be a bit of stretch. It's important to know the different types of fat that we're looking at: "there's saturated fat, there's unsaturated fat, The unsaturated fat is what we consider heart healthy", explained Noel Konken, a clinical dietitian with Lee Health.

In an advisory released previous year, the AHA added that coconut oil has "no known offsetting favorable effects", and could increase LDL ("bad") cholesterol, a known cause of cardiovascular disease.

There are several indigenous populations around the world that indulge in coconut oil as their main cooking oil.
