The sun is seen through smoky air as it sets Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018, behind the Narrows Bridge in Tacoma, Wash.

Unhealthy air is common across the region due to numerous wildfires, according to the advisory.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires are drifting towards the Inland Northwest. "If we were near fires, the surface winds and the lower level winds would mean a lot more to us, but right now we are just looking at smoke coming in from further away", said Missoula City-County Health Department Air Quality Specialist Sarah Coefield.

Children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory illnesses are most at risk of serious health effects.

Air quality is expected to worsen throughout the day.

Smoke from fires in British Columbia drifting into Washington and Idaho will cause unhealthy air levels through Tuesday, the weather service said.

"I went biking yesterday, and I really felt it in my lungs, and I was really headachy and like, lethargic", Simon said Monday.

A current air quality check can be found here.

There are 17 large fires burning on more than 300,000 acres across Washington and OR with about 8,200 fire personnel deployed, according to the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center.

Now, another index conveys just how risky the air quality is.

It's a rare occurrence that also happened past year, raising concerns for many locals that it may become normal during wildfire season.

If you're anxious about the air quality in your home and don't already own an air purifier, you can build one for less than $20 if you have a box fan.

Many monitoring stations in B.C. are reporting AQHI health risk levels in the high to very high range, with some modest improvement expected in the next few days over the interior, but worse conditions along the coast as winds shift.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued another air quality alert on Monday, warning Minnesotans about the ongoing dangers of particulates in the air from wildfires burning in Canada.

An air quality alert is also in place across Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho.
