TURKEY USA ECONOMIC CRISIS

TURKEY USA ECONOMIC CRISIS

According to Turkey's Vice President Fuat Oktay, the tariffs were increased "within the framework of the principle of reciprocity in retaliation for the deliberate economic attacks by the United States".

He was also charged with supporting the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which was designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey and the U.S.

Turkey's central bank on Monday announced it was ready to take "all necessary measures" to ensure financial stability after the collapse of the lira, promising to provide banks with liquidity. It had depreciated almost 40 per cent against the dollar this year, driven by concerns over President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's macroeconomic policies and his stance against raising interest rates despite high inflation. Turkey has also hiked tariffs on USA goods such as tobacco, alcohol, cars, cosmetics and others.

In a Wednesday phone conversation with Erdogan, the German chancellor expressed her country's commitment to strengthening its cooperation with Turkey through reciprocal visits at the highest levels, Turkey's Anadolu Agency quoted presidential sources as saying.

The court in the western city of Izmir rejected the appeal and ruled that Brunson will remain under house arrest, the state television TRT reported.

U.S. President Donald Trump and his vice president Mike Pence have repeatedly called for the pastor's release and have sanctioned two Turkish ministers after a Turkish court moved him to house arrest after 21 months in prison.

Erdogan exacerbated problems with the currency on Friday when he urged citizens to sell dollars and gold in exchange for lira. It also opened up an airlift to send food to Doha.

Cevdet Erdol, president of the Health Sciences University in Istanbul, urged Turks to boycott US tobacco products and "to stop smoking altogether", according to Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency.

Turkey's trade minister says increased tariffs have been imposed on 22 types of produce and goods imported from the United States, amounting to $533 million of extra duties.

"Pastor Andrew Brunson is an innocent man held in Turkey & justice demands that he be released".

"We've seen no evidence that Pastor Brunson has done anything wrong and we believe he is a victim of unfair and unjust detention by the government of Turkey", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said at the time.

Relations between the two NATO allies have plummeted in one of their worst crises in decades as Trump tries to secure the release of Brunson, an evangelical pastor from North Carolina being tried in Turkey on espionage and terrorism-related charges.

Ferit Temur, an Ankara-based policy analyst on Russian Federation and Eurasia, also said Erdogan's speech demanding the United States abandon its hostile policy towards Turkey and threatening to form new alliances with the East was "a routine, weak political act".

She said the USA was "monitoring the situation".

After Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's appeal to boycott US electronic products on Tuesday, Turks started to raise their voices in social media by sharing the list of the USA items from fast food to clothing brands to be boycotted.

Erdogan also renewed a call for Turks to convert their dollars into the lira, to help strengthen the currency.
