Mosquitoes can spread these viruses by feeding on the blood of infected birds and then biting another host animal or mammal such as a human or a horse. Treated areas in August have included Arroyo, Mace Ranch and Pioneer parks as well as the Isla Greenbelt.

Some of the early symptoms include can include a fever, weak muscles, aches and pains, confusion and even sensitivity to light or tremors. While WNV can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe infection.

No cases of human contraction have been reported.

The health department is continuing a four-month surveillance program to monitor mosquito-borne diseases in Cabell County, which began in late May, conjunction with the West Virginia Office of Laboratory Studies. Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide the best protection. Most notably, they swarm your house and can breed in just a few drops of water.

Install or Repair Screens - Some mosquitoes like to come indoors. Dispose of water-holding containers, such as ceramic pots, used tires, and tire swings.

"Make sure to fix or install window and door screens to keep mosquitoes from entering your home".

Clean and chlorinate swimming pools.

Sacramento County - particularly Elk Grove, the Pocket and areas south of Fruitridge Road - have been hard hit by West Nile activity this summer, prompting aerial spraying over residential neighborhoods in July. Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, bed nets and camping gear and should not be applied to skin.

"Last week we recorded 17 new cases", - stated in the message of the Hellenic centre for control and prevention of diseases.

The outbreak, mostly in the western suburbs of Athens, mark a reappearance of the virus after an outbreak a year ago when Greek authorities registered 48 cases, resulting in five deaths.
