Fredericton Police say two officers are among four people that died in a shooting incident Friday morning in the north side of the New Brunswick city.

"Of the four people killed in this morning's shootings on Brookside Drive, two were Fredericton Police officers", tweeted the force's official account.

The Police have urged people in the area of the shooting to remain in their homes.

One person was in custody, and there was no further threat to the public, police said. Do not disclose police locations on [social media].

He heard more similar noises about five minutes later.

David MacCoubrey said he awoke in his Brookside Drive apartment at 7:07 a.m.

"My heart goes out to everyone affected by this morning's shooting".

RCMP will be taking over the homicide investigation, Fitch said, and external officers have been called in to help provide shift relief for Fredericton police.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered his condolences via Twitter, and said that the government is "following the situation closely".

Travis Hrubeniuk said his fiancee had just left for work around 7:45 a.m. when he began hearing a steady stream of sirens.

It is rare in Canada for police officers to be killed in the line of duty.

Tim Morehouse, who also lives in the apartment complex, said he heard someone yelling "Shut up!"

"Upon arrival (at the apartment building), they observed two civilian victims on the ground. Residents are encouraged to follow their direction", he said on Twitter, referring to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

"I just woke up and heard gunshots and I looked outside my window".

"He used to always say to me that it did not matter what happened, that he would always come home ... and this is the first day that he has not home", she said.
