United had offered to pay his release clause and £150,000 a week but Godin is intrinsic to Diego Simeone's plans and settled in Madrid.

Mourinho has lost confidence in the likes of Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones and has desperately been on the lookout for a new centre-back.

It's left the club chasing a great number of defensive options this summer with Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng regularly linked with a move.

As recently as this morning in his pre-match press conference for United's Premier League opener at home to Leicester tomorrow night (8pm), Mourinho revealed he was not confident a new defender would come in.

Manchester United made an eleventh hour effort to sign Uruguayan global Diego Godin, but their advances have been rebuffed by the defender.

"I'm not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today so is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed".

Godin has been at Madrid since 2010 and has made 350 appearances for the club.

Manchester United have until 5 PM BST to get this deal done.

"So I will have to focus on the players I have".

The report claims United also offered to double Godin's wages to £8.1m-per-season after tax but unfortunately they have not been given any encouragement that a deal can be done before today's 5pm deadline. However, the 121-time capped Uruguayan global feels settled in the Spanish capital and enjoys an excellent relationship with his current boss Simeone, which has led to him rejecting the English giants' overtures.
