"The Syria condemns in the strongest terms the appalling massacre committed by the Saudi aggression on a hospital and a public market in Yemen, which left hundreds of martyrs and wounded from the innocent Yemeni citizens", an official source at the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

Spokesman Colonel Turki al-Malki, said the coalition has developed many rules of engagement because of the nature of military operations.

Rebel-run media outlets accused the Saudi-led coalition of carrying out the attacks in Hodeida.

Martin Griffiths told the Security Council that military experts say the rebel-held Red Sea port of Hodeida, Yemen, "has become the center of gravity of the war" - and avoiding a battle for the port and the city "has a better chance of being resolved within a comprehensive political settlement".

Meanwhile, the United Nations said it will invite the parties involved in Yemen's conflict for talks on 6 September.

Saudi Arabia suspended oil exports through the channel following last week's Houthi attacks on crude tankers.

Qassemi also noted that the daily bombardment of civilian targets and massacre of innocent and defenceless people of Yemen by Saudi and Emirati warplanes should not normalize the crimes committed by the aggressors in the eyes of public opinion at regional, global and worldwide levels and make them indifferent to the crisis and the plight of the Yemenis.

He said there remained "huge differences" between the government and rebels.

As Common Dreams reported, global aid groups have warned that an attempt by the Saudi-led coalition to take control of the port city could imperil shipments of life-saving food and medicine to millions of Yemenis as they face widespread food shortages and a worsening cholera epidemic.

Yemen's war has killed almost 10,000 people and triggered what the United Nations calls the world's largest single humanitarian crisis.

A missile attack last week against a Saudi oil tanker in the Red Sea by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi fighters drove home the dangers to global shipping from a seemingly unwinnable war in the impoverished country.

Most of the aid supplies arriving in Yemen come through Hodeidah.

The Yemeni port city of Hodeidah is the only access for aid and other essential relief for the country that recently emerged from a really bad cholera epidemic described by World Health Organization as the largest cholera outbreak in history.

"Hospitals are protected under global humanitarian law".

"Every day this week we have seen new cholera cases in Hodeida, and now this", Grande said.

Britain's UN Ambassador Karen Pierce, the current council president, said after the meeting that "there was very strong support" for Griffiths and "we're united in his efforts to get the parties to Geneva".

"With the economy in tatters and health and sanitation facilities throughout the country destroyed, conditions are now rampant for disease and starvation to spread", said Tamer Kirolos, Save the Children's Yemen Country Director.
