The helicopter crashed in the east of Russia

A Russian helicopter has crash-landed in Krasnoyarsk Territory, with reports saying at least 18 people have died.

'There were three crew members and 15 passengers overseas the Mi-8 that belonged to Utair airline, ' said the ministry.

Among those killed were three members of the crew, with the other 15 believed to have been oil workers.

The dead were working for a subsidiary of oil giant Rosneft in the remote Vankor oil field, which is above the Arctic Circle.

'The helicopter had undergone a pre-flight inspection, it was technically sound, ' said a law enforcement source.

The helicopter was reportedly taking workers to an oil station.

Investigators will inquire into the incident, a local official told RIA Novosti, naming technical issues or pilot error among the most probable causes of the crash. "According to preliminary information, the Mi-8 carrying passengers, for reasons unknown, collided with the external suspension of the second helicopter after take-off".

"He flew 5,990 hours, 2,300 of which he was the helicopter commander", Utair's statement said.

The country's Investigative Committee said it opened a criminal investigation into the crash.

A Mi-8 helicopter with passengers on board has crashed in Krasnoyarsk Region, Siberia.

The second helicopter was undamaged and landed safely, the committee said. Meanwhile, black boxes from the Mi-8 have already been retrieved from the crash site, but their condition is yet unclear.
