The wildfire, which started over a week ago, is at almost 142,000 acres, destroying 1,073 homes. Chaplains and mental health experts also were being sent to neighborhoods to accompany those returning home. "We're in uncharted territory". "Since civilization emerged 10,000 years ago, we haven't had this kind of heat condition, and it's going to continue getting worse. I see there's a few statuaries in the backyard that maybe we can save".

Forecasters said areas with the highest threat include the massive blaze near Redding and two fires burning next to each other around Clearlake about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of San Francisco.

As the fire continues to rage, some residents have been allowed to return to their homes to review the damage.

Tens of thousands of people remain under evacuation orders. The Carr Fire was 39 percent contained after killing six people and incinerating 1,067 homes.

This year's California wildfire season has been more destructive than in years past, burning about 290,000 acres (117,300 hectares), more than double the five-year average over that same period, according to Cal Fire.

More than 13,000 firefighters are battling blazes statewide with the help of crews from as far away as Florida. "We are routinely now seeing fires reach 100,000 acres several times in one month and it's only July, so we have a long way to go in this fire season, and as we saw previous year fire season can go right up through December".

Those figures, along with the fact that large fires are starting earlier in the year, has state officials anxious.

California Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency and has requested aid from the White House. He told reporters Wednesday that "nature is very powerful, and we're not on the side of nature".

The worldwide fire teams from Australia and New Zealand will arrive in Redding on Monday, Pimlott said. At least 16,500 homes are still threatened by these fires and over 40,000 residents are under evacuation orders.

The two blazes, known together as the Mendocino Complex fires, are in their sixth day. "When the winds are strong enough and the fire is hot enough, sometimes, the rising air columns start to rotate".

Western Lake County had its advisory upgraded to a mandatory evacuation for the area west of Lucerne at Bartlett Springs Road and Highway 20, south of the fire, east of the fire, north of Clear Lake including the communities of Blue Lakes, Upper Lake, Nice, Lakeport, Witter Springs, Bachelor Valley, Scotts Valley and Saratoga Springs, according to a Mendocino National Forest incident update.

In Sierra Nevada, firefighters achieved 41 percent containment of a 115-square-mile (298-square-kilometer) forest fire that has shut down Yosemite Valley and other adjacent portions of Yosemite National Park at what is normally the height of summer tourism.
