President Trump received a letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un this week, . coinciding with the return of potentially dozens of America's war dead from the North.

US officials have been closely watching North Korea's willingness to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

McKeague said he was "guardedly optimistic" that North Korea would agree to the return of more remains and also to joint recovery operations with the U.S.at former battlefields and prison camps.

"Thank you to Chairman Kim Jong Un for keeping your word & starting the process of sending home the remains of our great and beloved missing fallen!" Trump wrote in the tweet.

Trump said in that tweet to Kim: "I look forward to seeing you soon!"

In a regular press briefing on Thursday, . the White House press secretary said a second meeting has not been "currently locked in or finalized",. but added that the White House is open to that discussion.

"He did receive a letter, I believe he received it on August 1st".

"That letter will be delivered shortly", she said. "I can say that the letters addressed their commitment from their joint statement that was made at the Singapore summit and they're going to continue working towards complete and total denuclearization".

The U.S. ambassador also expressed skepticism regarding North Korea's dismantling of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site and the missile site at Tongchang-ri.

The Washington Post on Tuesday reported that USA intelligence officials suspect North Korea is continuing to build new missiles in the same research facility that manufactured the country's ballistic missiles capable of reaching the United States.

With little public sign of progress toward Trump's aim of Korean denuclearization, the White House said the letter followed up on the pair's June 12 summit.

North Korea returned the remains of 55 American soldiers.

McKeague said that DPAA has a DNA database from 92 percent of the families of the estimated 7,700 USA service members still listed as missing from the 1950-53 Korean War and DNA comparisons with the remains from the 55 cases would begin shortly.

At the summit, Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the regime.

Senior Trump administration officials have urged patience, cautioning that the process of denuclearising North Korea and removing the threat of its long-range missiles will take time.
