After months of speculation, it has finally been confirmed that the late Carrie Fisher will reprise her role as Princess Leia one more time.

Commenting on the news, Hamill tweeted, "It's bittersweet facing my final chapter without her-She is simply irreplaceable". Hamill also said that Fisher "would love the worldwide outpouring of affection" after the news broke that she would appear in Episode IX.

"We desperately loved Carrie Fisher", said J.J. Abrams, who is back at the helm for "Episode IX", having directed "Episode VII: The Force Awakens" in 2015.

"Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us", he shared in a statement issued to Variety.

Director JJ Abrams said there was never any intention to have Leia played by someone else or be recreated using computer-generated imagery, reports BBC.

Making Star Wars goes one step further to present a third possible scenario, too: Episode IX has earmarked Jordan to be some as-yet-undiscovered planet in the Lucasfilm franchise. Speculation can now continue as to whether Luke Skywalker will be back as a Force ghost or if he will demonstrate even more impressive Force prowess.

Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant are among the new faces, while old "Star Wars" hands Anthony Daniels and Billy Dee Williams return as C-3PO and Lando Calrissian. J.J. Abrams understood Carrie's iconic role, and he has masterfully re-crafted this final entry to include this unused and very last footage of Carrie ever taken, without resorting to CGI or animatronics.

Abrams co-wrote Episode IX with Chris Terrio.

John Boyega also cheered the move to keep Fisher in the next Star Wars film.

Disney said Fisher's role would be gleaned from previously unreleased footage from "The Force Awakens", with the blessing of her daughter, Billie Lourd.

John Williams will return to score the film.
