Vettel now trails Hamilton by 24 points, one short of a race victory, heading into F1's summer break.

Mercedes F1 driver Valtteri Bottas was not too happy to hear Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff describing him as a "sensational wingman" to Lewis Hamilton during the Hungarian Grand Prix - a.

Bottas and Vettel made contact as the Ferrari driver overtook the Mercedes for second position at Turn 2 and squeezed Bottas towards the apex.

Hamilton is 17 points clear of Vettel in the standings after 11 races, with Sunday's round the last before the sport's August break.

The most exciting element is that Hamilton is still young enough at 33 to compete for more World Drivers' Championships and create more history.

After Saturday's rain-lashed qualifying, the teams had a free choice of tyres, which saw Ferrari split their strategy - Vettel, like Sainz, choosing softs, while Raikkonen and the rest started on ultra-softs. "We could have probably caught him but not passed him".

Hamilton and Bottas made a clean start, with Vettel passing his teammate Kimi Raikkonen for third place around the outside at Turn 2.

A virtual safety vehicle after McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne retired briefly raised Ferrari hopes but no further drama unfolded until Vettel managed to overtake Bottas five laps from the end. He broke his front wing but Vettel somehow continued without damage or a puncture, keeping Raikkonen at bay in the process to finish a distant second behind Hamilton.

"Before the incident at the end with Valtteri in Turn 1, I knew he had some damage so I knew it should be relatively easy to pass him, but he obviously just went too deep into that turn", Ricciardo said.

"We knew that it [being on different tyre strategies] would also make it very hard to win, even for me".

"After that I was able to do some decent times and pull the gap".

Vettel hopes points will flow freely, once glitches are ironed out.

"This year we all know that Ferrari really do have the upper hand pace-wise", said the Briton after his fifth win of the campaign. Wolff, speaking after the race, said: "The result feels bittersweet". Without that it would have been a much more relaxed last part of the race, probably hunting down Lewis.

"Vettel, who finised second behind Hamilton, said: "His tyres were getting worse and worse and I was quite confident I could get him".

"Don't forget, the priority for the team is to win the race and the Teams' championship". So I hope that this year, and I think this year has shown so far that our vehicle is more efficient, our auto is stronger and still has a lot of potential to unleash - so I'm quite confident with what's sitting in the pipeline that we can improve.
