The indictment - which comes days before President Donald Trump holds a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin - was the clearest allegation yet of Russian efforts to meddle in American politics.

On Friday's show, Fox News Contributor Charles Hurt joined Tom Shillue to react to the breaking news. He said the demonstration is not directed specifically against either Putin or Trump.

Arizona U.S. Sen. John McCain echoed the sentiment.

Negotiations would then be widened to include members of both delegations, he said, adding that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will hold parallel talks in Helsinki with his US counterpart, Mike Pompeo.

"These indictments are further proof of what everyone but the president seems to understand: President Putin is an adversary who interfered in our elections to help President Trump win", Schumer said.

Macron and others said they did not interpret Trump's words as a direct threat to quit the alliance Washington founded in 1949 to contain Soviet expansion.

"Failure to stand up to Putin would constitute a profound betrayal of the Constitution and our democracy", Pelosi said in a statement.
