Hierro stepped up to become interim coach after Julen Lopetegui was sensationally sacked on the eve of the World Cup following the announcement he was to take charge at Real Madrid at the end of the tournament.

The 2010 champions were eliminated from the World Cup by hosts Russian Federation in the round of 16 of the competition after losing 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is set to be named as the new manager of the Spain national team, according to widespread reports in the country.

Before that, Spain were humiliated at the hands of the Netherlands in 2014 and beaten by Italy at Euro 2016 - their 2008-2012 winning streak but a distant memory.

It emerged on Sunday that Rubiales was to put forward Lopetegui's successor to the RFEF's board on Monday and, shortly after doing so, Luis Enrique's appointment was made official.

Lopetegui had taken the Real Madrid job without informing his employers, a betrayal that left Rubiales and the Spanish FA seething.

Enrique has been out of management since leaving the Nou Camp last June.

Luis Enrique Martinez has been officially appointed the new coach of the Spanish national team.

The first press conference unveiled Jose Francisco Molina, 47, a former goalkeeper at Atletico Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna who played nine times for Spain, as the team's sporting director.
