Southgate tells England stars: ‘Be bigger than 1966 heroes’

But now we know, it's more than just a waistcoat (also available at Marks and Spencer); it's a lucky waistcoat.

For a country bitterly divided by the Brexit referendum as well as by age-old regional and class divides, the national team's journey to the World Cup semi-finals has been a welcome relief from political arguments and rancour.

A spokesperson from Walkabout said: "We've been delighted by how many England fans have adopted Walkabout as their home for the football".

In 2018, Gareth Southgate's waistcoat is both a token of good luck and an England mascot - quite something for such a modest garment.

"Gareth Southgate has re-energised English football, as anyone who's been to a Walkabout to watch a match will tell you!"

"We want people to celebrate.but not at the expense of law-abiding fans and emergency services' resources", he said.

England were on Sunday looking forward to their first World Cup semi-final since 1990 as host nation Russian Federation came to terms with the end of their extraordinary run following defeat on penalties to Croatia.

"I think it's the best opportunity that England's ever had, and probably might ever have", he said, "because no disrespect to Croatia but the other side of the draw was a lot more hard".

Should they succeed they'll have the chance to play France or Belgium in the World Cup final. The chaotic corner shop closest to England's hotel was selling kitchen knives, women's underwear and frisbees but no World Cup paraphernalia.

Southgate has made bold decisions to cast aside Jack Wilshere, Rooney and Hart among others, and then replaced them with inexperienced players.

"You get the sense that Southgate has been part of the team when England have bowled into town, declared themselves favourites and crashed out playing these horribly imbalanced teams full of stars, and overelaborate systems they barely understand".

Meanwhile, Dele Alli, who scored England's second goal, said it was a great team performance. "Just care about a decent broadcast and another England win".

Manchester United's Young, who picked up an ankle injury against Colombia, has also improved with rest and rehab work on Wednesday.

The Everton number one has found himself under fire during the tournament but he produced several superb saves on Saturday as England beat Sweden 2-0 to reach the semi-finals.

Presenter Gary Lineker became emotional after watching a clip of the late Sir Bobby Robson reflecting on England's 1990 World Cup heartache against Germany.
