Cal Fire: One killed in Klamathon Fire burning in Siskiyou County

The fire had burned 50 to 80 acres as of Saturday morning and was only 5 percent contained.

According to the Duchesne (doo-SHAYNE') County Sheriff's Office, officials said residents allowed to return Saturday should remain on alert and prepared to evacuate if necessary. But Cal Fire said Saturday morning that the Klamathon Fire had only destroyed 15 structures.

California Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency for Siskiyou County, citing "extreme peril" to people and property.

While the fire was growing quickly Thursday afternoon a 20 to 26 miles per hour south wind was pushing it along the Interstate.

Flames from the so-called Alpine or West Fire charred at least 400 acres along Interstate 8 in eastern San Diego County as temperatures soared to 108 degrees.

Cal Fire spokeswoman Cheryl Buliavac said numerous homes had been damaged or destroyed as the fire raced through Hornbrook.

No injuries have been reported thus far, according to Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni.

Firefighters in Santa Barbara County were battling a new "fast-moving and wind-driven" blaze Friday night.

Hundreds of evacuation orders have been put in place, and flames have already reached multiple structures.

At a Red Cross shelter, Ben Stanfill told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he and other relatives helped evacuate his mother's house, even though it wasn't in a mandatory evacuation area.

Past year was the worst fire season on record in the state, with thousands of homes lost and dozens killed _ from Northern California wine country south to Los Angeles and San Diego counties.

"It's going to be a long fire season", Lee Beyer with the U.S. Forest Service says, noting the dry winter and near-drought conditions in much of the western U.S.

The Creek Fire in San Bernardino National Forest was 33 acres and 90 percent contained as of Thursday, and the Valley Fire was 200 acres with zero percent containment Friday.

Proclaiming a local state of emergency is an essential step for local governments dealing with significant incidents.

The blaze is threatening 300 homes near Hornbook, California, a town of 250 people about 14 miles (22 kilometers) south of the OR border.

The state fires are among 60 large blazes burning in 13 states, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
