Ramos had posted a message on his Twitter account, which was dedicated nearly entirely to attacking the Capital Gazette and its reporters, that warned the paper over a criticism of Trump, saying cryptically that it could "end badly" for the paper. His long history of taunts and threats also show that companies must stay vigilant and design plans to help employees survive such deadly attacks.

The suspect said in the correspondence he was on his way to the newsroom "with the objective of killing every person present", the Sun reports.

Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley told The Baltimore Sun on Monday that Trump had denied his request for flags to be flown at half-staff in wake of the mass shooting in Annapolis, Maryland, that killed five newspaper staffers.

Indeed, many of Trump's critics saw a connection between his verbal attacks on journalists and the massacre allegedly carried out by Ramos. "Is there a cutoff for tragedy?"

Wendi Winters, Gerald Fischman, Robert Hiaasen, John McNamara and Rebecca Smith were all killed during the shooting.

A column by Hartley contended that Ramos had harassed a former high school classmate on Facebook and that he had pleaded guilty to criminal harassment, according to a legal document.

"This guy is behind bars but he continues to inflict harm from a place where we thought we were safe from this guy", said Marquardt, who admitted to sleeping "with a baseball bat next to me for months because of this guy".

Trump has ordered flags to be lowered following other mass shootings, and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan ordered Maryland state flags to be flown at half-staff from Friday through Monday.

Prosecutors say the attack, carried out with smoke grenades and a pump-action shotgun, was motivated by a vendetta after the defendant unsuccessfully sued the newspaper in a defamation case.

The White House says President Trump ordered the flags lowered as soon as he learned of the request.

An overflow crowd sought solace with laughter and amusing memories and occasional sobs.

Hannah Hiaasen, his youngest daughter, said the family called him "Big Rob" - a nickname that fit the journalist who stood 6-foot-5.

Hiaasen was honored with stories, poems, and songs. Indeed, media interviews with Marquardt and statements by the woman who was stalked indicate that they were fearful of the suspect and made those fears known to local law enforcement. But it wasn't just his height that made the nickname ring true to those who knew him best. The statement says Ramos then "attempted to hide himself under a desk" until police arrived and located him. "I thought he was smart and amusing and wise", Tyler said before the gathering began.
