Arsenal have announced the signing of Greece worldwide defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund for an undisclosed fee.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos understands that his name "Papastathopoulos" is very tough to pronounce but he has made it simple for the Arsenal fans as he has told them to be using "Papa" instead of his lengthy name of "Papastathopoulos".

Giving his first official interview to the club website upon signing his contract, Papastathopoulos expressed his delight at being able to get involved with the new-look Arsenal.

Papastathopoulos scored 10 goals in 198 appearances after joining Dortmund from Werder Bremen in 2013.

Arsenal will pay a fee believed to be in the region of £17million for a player who was identified by Sven Mislintat.

With Greece failing to qualify for the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup, Sokratis is expected to be with the squad from day one of pre-season and be fit in time for the start of the Premier League in August.

He will add much-needed experience to Arsenal's back-line, with the reported fee said to be £17.6m.

"The 30-year-old arrives from Borussia Dortmund, where he won two Bundesliga titles and one German Cup".

"It's a lovely moment and I'm very happy that I will be here for the next years", the 30-year-old told the club's website. With new manager Unai Emery replacing long-serving Arsene Wenger, the Gunners have already laid plans for the new era with the signings of Bernd Leno and Stephan Lichtsteiner.
