Lump that moved across woman’s face leads to stomach-churning find

The mysterious

The mysterious"lump on the woman's face and the worm that was eventually removed

The case report said that doctors in Russian Federation surgically removed the worm from the woman's face, and she recovered.

But surprisingly, the Russian woman's case is not one in a million, as cases of people getting infected by parasitic worms are becoming increasingly common in the recent times.

The bump first appeared below her left eye, then reappeared on her upper left eyelid five days later.

The lump them migrated to her top lip, causing it to swell and itch a little, resulting in a burning sensation.

Inside of the new host, the larvae is able to finish its evolution into an adult worm.

The lady chose to document the movement of the nodule and this she did by taking photographs of her face.

The case appeared this month in the New England Journal of Medicine, where it was reported that the 32-year-old patient saw an ophthalmologist after two weeks of the lump moving around her face.

Here's something uncomfortable to think about: A worm moving around under the skin on your face. First, it was a small bump under her left eye. Five days later, it moved to her upper left eyelid.

That's because humans aren't its preferred host - it usually lives in carnivores, such as cats, dogs, wolves, coyotes, foxes and sea lions.

Usually, the physical damage is minimal and pulling the worm out does the trick. However, luckily, these worms can nearly never reproduce in humans, and all symptoms usually disappear quickly if the worm is removed - so if you've noticed any unusual lumps moving around your body after a mosquito bite, you should probably get to a doctor.

The CDC states that D. repens - the species the woman in Russian Federation had - are not seen in the United States; another species, D. tenuis, has been reported in North America, but only in raccoons. With the help of forceps, the parasite was surgically removed.

Other than Europe, this parasite is also found in the Mediterranean region and sub-Saharan Africa.

Medical experts agree this parasite is just another reason to do what you can to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

File of a previous dirofilaria repens case in a human. The larvae then make their way into the mosquito's mouth parts and, Nolan said, when the mosquito bites an animal - or a human - they crawl quickly into the bite site.
