BNSF: Estimated 230000 gallons of oil spilled in derailment

Officials worry that the Iowa spill may cause oil to reach as far south as Omaha, 150 miles downstream from the site of the derailment.

About 100,000 gallons had been hemmed off using booms out of the estimated 230,000 gallons spilled, BNSF said in a statement on Saturday.

Tank cars carrying crude oil are shown derailed about a mile south of Doon, Iowa, Friday, June 22, 2018.

Governor Adam Gregg listen to flood victims while visiting the northwest Iowa flood regions and the BNSF train derailment. The city of Rock Valley, Iowa, has already shut down its water wells and plans to drain and clean them until testing indicates the water is safe to drink. Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep (VAN'-dur stoop) in neighboring Lyon County says the train derailed between 5 and 5:30 a.m. Friday just south of Doon.

Metropolitan Utilities District, which provides the Omaha metro area's drinking water, said it was monitoring the spill.

According to the Associated Press, officials at the scene believed that the floodwaters were a factor in the derailment, but were unsure whether high water pushed cars off the track, damaged the track in some way, or played some other role.

One or more of 31 tanker cars on the derailed train is leaking into floodwaters surrounding the tracks near Doon, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) southeast of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

It's not yet clear how many tankers are leaking or how much oil has escaped. The Little Rock River rose rapidly after heavy rain Wednesday and Thursday. It joins the Rock River a few hundreds yard west, which courses south into the Big Sioux River. Williams said officials hoped to reach the cars sometime Saturday. Cleanup crews were dispatched to the site.

Evacuations began in Rocky Valley early Friday morning as water poured into homes and basements.

Williams says crews have been skimming oil from floodwaters. That empties into the Missouri River at Sioux City. Floodwater along the Little Rock River is running over a road north of the track. The Rock River, which is usually about 100 yards wide (about 91 m), is now about half a mile (804 m) wide, according to Iowa Natural Resources Department spokesman Ken Hessenius.
