Whether or not they had a mental health condition, most people who died by suicide had experienced "one or more factors that may have contributed, including a relationship problem, a crisis in the recent couple weeks and problematic substance abuse", she said.

Between 1999 and 2016, suicide rates in these states, along with Vermont, New Hampshire and SC, rose 38 percent to 58 percent. Though mental health is often blamed for suicides, more than half of the people who took their own lives in 27 states in 2015 had not been diagnosed with a mental illness, the CDC said.

"These findings are disturbing", Schuchat says. We must do more to prevent such tragic deaths through greater awareness of mental health, common risks and warning signs and effective interventions and treatments.

In North Dakota, the rate jumped more than 57 percent.

That, combined with state legislative support, federal grants through the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and relatively strict laws on gun ownership, have put CT in a relatively strong position to keep suicide deaths down, said Andrea Duarte of the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services' prevention division.

Nevada was the only state that didn't see an increase in its suicide rate during the study period, though the state has had a consistently high rate of suicide, the report found.

Among the agency's recommendations: Reduce a high-risk person's access to lethal items such as medications and firearms.

"When you do a psychological autopsy and go and look carefully at medical records and talk to family members of the victims", he said, "90 percent will have evidence of a mental health condition".

Previous studies have suggested economic downturns and the nation's opioid crisis contributed to the rise in middle-aged suicides.

Experts say it's important to have a conversation if you're concerned about someone. In fact, statistics show the suicide rate among women is on the rise.

"The paper makes a clear case, correctly, about the fact that there is no one cause for suicide", he said, adding that "availability of means" makes death possible. And so that's one of the things that this study really shows us. Among people ages 15 to 34, suicide is the second leading cause of death. The alliance is working with more than 250 hospitals to ensure that someone brought in after a suicide attempt is connected to long-term mental-health care, Dr. Reed said.

"Suicide affects us all", Cerel said in the release. She and her colleagues recently analyzed suicides from 1999 to 2016.

According to Bill Walker, director of Kern Behavioral Health and Recovery Services, someone dies from suicide every 16 minutes.
