It's confirmed that Alexandre Lacazette and Anthony Martial will not be travelling to Russian Federation for the 2018 FIFA World Cup after France coach Didier Deschamps named his 23-man Les Bleus squad and the Premier League duo didn't feature in it.

The attacking duo were instead included on an 11-strong standby list for the World Cup in Russian Federation.

However, there was incredible competition for places in France's attacking squad and Deschamps has instead opted for Griezmann - a diminutive speedster - and Giroud - a tall target-man - to lead the line for France in Russian Federation.

The former West Ham United player was forced off with a hamstring injury in the first half of Marseille's Europa League final defeat against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, and that fitness doubt persuaded Deschamps to leave him out of the squad of 23. "He played the first half-hour (against Atletico), but he aggravated his injury, and the recovery time needed for that type of injury is three weeks", Deschamps informed.

This hypothetical "C Team" of French stars highlights just how hard a task the Socceroos have ahead of them, when Bert van Marwijk's men face them in Kazan on Saturday June 16th at 8pm (AEST).

Les Bleus have a wealth of options up front, with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Chelsea's Olivier Giroud named in the squad.

With so much attacking talent available there were always going to be casualties and Deschamps has preferred Ligue 1 stars Florian Thauvin and Nabil Fekir over Martial and Lacazette, who both had underwhelming Premier League campaigns.

Elsewhere, Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy was called up despite having hardly featured for Pep Guardiola's side since returning from a serious knee injury.

As expected, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is not in the squad after being snubbed since being involved in a sex tape-blackmail scandal in 2015.

The squad, without injured centre back Laurent Koscielny, lacks experience, with an average age of 26 and only nine players from the group who reached the Euro 2016 final.

'I have had these two players in several situations, as starters and substitutes.

"I make decisions for the good of the France team".

With the FIFA World Cup edging closer as days passed by, each of the 32 teams have been busy releasing their preliminary and final 23-man squads for the competition.

Prior to their departure for Russia, France will take on Ireland, Italy and the United States in friendlies.
