A few projectiles were thrown on police as fans of Olympique de Marseille were leaving the Lyon stadium after their 3-0 loss to Athletico Madrid in the UEFA Europa league final this morning.

The French side looked even more lost when Payet went off and Griezmann's supremely well-taken second goal effectively finished them off.

Griezmann, 27, has scored 29 goals and contributed 15 assists during an outstanding season as he won the first major trophy of his four-year career at Atletico.

But Atletico were hit with a transfer ban and the former Real Sociedad ace revealed he could not leave without a replacement lined up.

The 27-year-old France worldwide has been heavily linked with a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano this summer and showed his class as Atleti ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in Lyon.

Atletico Madrid will earn near €27m from winning the Europa League final on Thursday. "I am among the best three players in the world because of him".

"I chose to start Dimitri, one of our best players", he told reporters after the game.

Barca are said to be keen to activate a reported €100 million release clause in Griezmann's contract, but Atleti general manager Clemente Villaverde insists the Rojiblancos are desperate to retain him.

Propelled by the fervent supporters who had waited 14 years to reach another European final, the French side created two early chances but striker Germain and defender Adil Rami both missed the target.

"It was a dream of mine to win a trophy with Atleti, with Simeone and with my team mates", Griezmann added. "But I was able to help the team to win this trophy".

"This season was a tough one, but this Europa League represents more than the Europa League trophy - it shows the value of hard work and persistence, or keeping at it and working hard. I dedicate this to all the fans that came here and all the ones that are waiting for us in Madrid".

Four minutes after the re-start, Koke ran into a hole in the Marseille midfield and slipped the ball to Griezmann who dinked the ball past Mandanda. On Wednesday, Griezmann's first goal of the night albeit came from a defensive error on Marseille's part, but it completely took the sails out of the French side.
