Investigators believe deadly Southern California explosion was intentional

An explosion at a California medical building on Tuesday - which left one person dead and three others injured - was the result of "an intentional detonation", according to FBI investigators.

A USA official says a deadly explosion at a Southern California office building is being investigated as an intentional act and investigators believe the blast may have come from a package.

"We have not found any type of specific device inside of the building right now that would tell us or lead us to exactly what the device was - if there was a device", Sawyer said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are responding, according a spokesperson from each agency.

Firefighters and sheriff's deputies escort children from Academy on the Hill pre-k school in Aliso Viejo, Calif., on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, after a fatal explosion nearby.

"We are still trying to determine if this explosion was accidental or intentional", said Carrie Braun, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

A woman who was on her way to an appointment in the area told CBS2 she arrived just after the blast occurred, and she saw fire on the roof of the building.

Unconfirmed initial witness reports said that the blast may have been a gas explosion, but Orange County Fire Authority Capt. The cause of the blast is being investigated.

Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy says 70 firefighters were dispatched in response to a 1:09 p.m. Tuesday call from Aliso Viejo.

". They weren't on fire, they were helping each other across the street, walking very slowly and a lot of shock, shaking, just full of ash all over their face, eyes bloodshot, just blood all over", the woman said. Still, they chose to evacuate a nearby day care and other surrounding businesses as a precaution.

The county's bomb squad and a hazmat team are preparing to search the building where the explosion occurred.

Bommarito said one of the injured people suffered from smoke inhalation, but the extent of the other victims' injuries was unknown.
