Garofalo has said any legislation would have to carry the support of the state's tribal casinos.

"If these provisions were allowed to stand, federal law would forbid the advertising of an activity that is legal under both federal and state law, and that is something that Congress has rarely done, ' Alito wrote, noting rules for advertising cigarettes and state lotteries".

Although the laws aren't quite in place yet, New Jersey is already making preparations to expand its casino industry with the introduction of sports betting. He and other proponents sought the ruling in order to help the state's ailing casinos and racetracks.

Murphy, a Democrat, says he's thrilled and credited the court victory to his predecessor, Christie.

"A great day for the rights of states and their people to make their own decisions", Christie wrote on Twitter.

New Jersey already has partial legislation on the books regarding sports betting.

"Pun intended, hold your horses", said Conrad.

Several major USA sports bodies had opposed the move, including the National Basketball Association. The move likely opens the gates for more of states around the country to get into the sports betting business including Florida.

In its statement, the National Football League noted that "Congress has long recognized the potential harms posed by sports betting to the integrity of sporting contests and the public confidence in these events".

We can now shift our focus on commencing sports betting, which will be off and running at Monmouth Park as soon as possible. It stated that states could not sponsor sports gambling, although it was grandfathered in four states - Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana - which previously had established legal sports gambling regulations. Lawmakers gave the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board authority to regulate sports betting.

It is only allowed in states such as Nevada, home to Las Vegas.

According to a 2017 report by Oxford Economics, if PASPA is struck down, New Jersey could generate over $173 million in tax revenue.

There may also be implications for sports media companies.

The Court's decision to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA), which forbade state-authorized sports gambling, now opens the doors on a plethora of potential changes in the sports industry.

Geoff Freeman, the organization's president and CEO, cited a Washington Post survey saying that 55 percent of Americans believe it's time to end the federal ban on sports betting.

The American Gaming Association is a trade group representing the USA casino industry. Others gaining included MGM Resorts, Boyd Gaming and Churchill Downs.

The NFL plans to ask Congress "to enact a core regulatory framework for legalized sports betting" following the Supreme Court's ruling that would allow sports wagers in most states. DraftKings, which has almost 10 million users, plans to offer a sports betting product later this year.
