Trump Greets 3 Americans Freed by North Korea

A woman walks by a huge screen showing U.S. President Donald Trump, left, and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, in Tokyo, Friday, March 9, 2018. Following the return to the United States of three US citizens detained by Pyongyang, Abe said the Trump-Kim summit will lead to progress on the Japanese abduction issue.

North Korea said it considered the matter closed when the late Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong Un's father, met Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in Pyongyang for a second summit meeting in May 2004.

The president later tweeted he hoped the meeting with Kim would bring about world peace. A few months ago, both the leaders had exchanged heated arguments with each other including warnings to attack with nuclear weapons.

"I think we have a very good chance of doing something very meaningful", Trump said.

Trump's meeting follows a recent thawing of relations on the Korean peninsula, after decades of tension.

Tony Kim, Kim Hak Song and Kim Dong Chul are three relieved and happy campers today.

Trump's aim is the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea.

US President Donald Trump welcomed the three freed American detainees who reached here on Thursday morning after they were released by North Korea.

Abe added that Japan will cooperate with the United States, South Korea and the global community, including China and Russian Federation, to resolve the various issues related to North Korea through the Singapore summit.

Asked about the possibility of Japan-North Korea talks, the government spokesman declined to give a direct answer, merely saying potential dialogue "should lead to settling the nuclear, missile and abduction issues".

Singapore had emerged as the likely host of the summit after Trump yielded to the concerns of his aides and backed off his desire to hold the meeting at the inter-Korean demilitarised zone.

The welfare and safety of USA citizens overseas is one of the highest priorities of the Department of State. We are grateful for the support of the Government of Sweden, our protecting power in Pyongyang, which has tirelessly advocated for USA citizens in need in the DPRK. "We hope the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula as well as permanent peace on the peninsula will successfully come about through this summit". Mongolia was considered but was seen as too close to China, they said.
