Mahathir to be sworn in as Malaysian PM

After losing the election this week to the opposition, led by former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, there had been concerns that Najib would try to flee the country to avoid the chance of prosecution for his role in the 1MDB scandal, which he was accused of covering up while in office.

It was a remarkable comeback for Mahathir, who was premier for 22 years until his retirement in 2003.

Najib Razak posted his response to the ban on his official Twitter account @NajibRazak, saying that he and his wife will be staying in Malaysia.

But most people who saw the video interpreted PM Lee's remark as saying that Najib, who heads the Barisan Nasional coalition, had the confidence in winning the upcoming Malaysia GE14, and thereby would continue to enable Najib to be the leader of Malaysia with the win.

Former Prime Minister of Malaysia Najib Razak canceled his visit to Indonesia.

The statement came after a flight schedule had shown that Najib and his wife were due to take a private jet to Jakarta at 10am from on Saturday morning.

During that time it became mostly associated with affirmative action programmes to boost the economic opportunites of the country's majority ethnic Malays.

The finance minister has been an ethnic Muslim Malay since 1974 and the appointment of Lim, a chartered accountant who led the wealthy northern state of Penang since 2008, reflects reforms pledged by Mahathir's alliance to heal racial divisions in the country blamed on decades-old preferential policies.

Newly elected Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has said he would reopen an investigation relating to allegations that Mr. Najib siphoned money from 1Malaysia Development Bhd., or 1MDB, the Malaysian state investment fund at the center of probes in multiple countries.

Nearly $700 million ended up in Najib's personal bank accounts, although the attorney-general said it was a donation from the Saudi royal family and cleared the then-premier of misconduct.

In the months after the scandal first broke in 2015, Nazir said, without criticising his brother, the handling of 1MDB had tarnished Malaysia's image.

USA investigators say Mr Najib's associates stole and looted at least 4.5 billion USA dollars (£3.3 billion) from the fund.

'We need to have this government today without delay, ' Mahathir, 92, said before Malaysia's king at the state palace in Kuala Lumpur. Najib has denied any wrongdoing.

Mahathir has vowed to return billions of dollars lost from 1MDB.

Anwar Ibrahim, once considered a potential future leader, was jailed on charges of corruption and sodomy after falling out with the government.

Although Anwar Ibrahim's release date has not yet been confirmed, Mahathir told a news conference in Petaling Jaya that the king has indicated that he is willing to pardon him "immediately".
