Former Maharashtra ATS chief Himanshu Roy allegedly commits suicide

Former Maharashtra ATS chief, Himanshu Roy, who was now serving as Maharashtra ADGP, shot himself dead with his service revolver at his residence on Friday.

Often referred to as "Arnold Schwarzenegger" of Mumbai Police, the 54-year-old Roy shot himself in the mouth with his service revolver at his house in Suniti Apartments at Nariman Point shortly after 1 p.m., a police statement said. Roy's family members rushed him to Bombay Hospital in Marine Lines where he was declared dead on arrival.

Roy and former Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria were the first police officers in the city to be given Z+ security cover in 2014.

A study done by Dr Kumar Prabhash, professor, medical oncology, TMH, found 70% of 160 patients with advanced head and neck cancers had psychological stress, which is a sign of depression.

"Whatever the reasons behind his step, the police department has lost a good officer".

According to sources, the top cop's frustration due to his prolonged illness led him to take the extreme step. He was leading the investigation into the IPL betting scandal.

A large number of police personnel, former and serving IPS and IAS officers, besides political leaders, including Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, were present for Roy's final journey. He had taken a long leave. He has been on leave from some time and his co-officers lauded the work of Himanshu Roy. He was the chief of Mumbai Crime Branch for four years. As the Anti-Terror Squad chief, Roy had also arrested software engineer Anees Ansari for allegedly planning to blow up the American School in Mumbai. Patnaik, who runs Konark Cancer Foundation in Mumbai, was also in talks with Roy to make him the brand ambassador of his NGO's cancer survivors' campaign. Journalist J Dey, who was known for his investigative pieces, was gunned down by four bike-borne killers in broad daylight near his residence in Mumbai's Powai on June 11, 2011.
