US Embassy Makes Preparation For Jerusalem Move

President Donald Trump announced the decision to shift the embassy in December as the administration prepared its peace plan for the region.

It is not yet clear whether President Trump will attend, although he has indicated that he may.

Israel occupied east Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it.

A Reuters witness saw workmen installing the signs in English, Hebrew and Arabic, near the south Jerusalem location of a U.S. consulate building that will be repurposed as the embassy when it is officially relocated from Tel Aviv on May 14.

In June 2017, however, like his predecessors, Trump signed a six-month waiver to delay the relocation, which would have complicated United States efforts to resume the long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

The opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem will be expensive, but it's worth it.

The first road signs directing people to the upcoming U.S. Embassy officially went up in Jerusalem.

The US will open its embassy in its current consulate in the capital's Arnona neighborhood on May 14.

Britain had joined 13 other UNSC member states to vote in favour of a resolution calling for Donald Trump to rescind his declaration that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, showing the depth of global opposition to the move. The city is claimed by Muslims, Christians and Jews to be historically important for them.

Since the creation of the Jewish state it has not recognised Jerusalem as its capital and considers that the final status of the city must be negotiated with the Palestinians. No country now has its embassy in Jerusalem, instead keeping them in the Israeli commercial capital Tel Aviv.

The signs in English, Hebrew, and Arabic were installed Monday ahead of next week's grand opening of the new embassy.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in April "at least half a dozen" countries were now "seriously discussing" following the USA lead, though he did not identify them. On February 23, the State Department announced the new embassy will open in May.
