Trump Slams 'Filthy' Comedian Michelle Wolf Over White House Correspondents' Dinner Jokes

White House Correspondents' dinner 2018: Comedy crossing the line?

White House Correspondents' dinner 2018: Comedy crossing the line?

Wolf's routine took aim at all of Washington, including the White House press corps, Democrats, Republicans, Trump and his administration. After a string of "how broke is he?" jokes about Trump's dubious billions - he flies failed business class, he looked for foreign oil in Don Junior's hair - she suddenly stepped out of character.

But it was Wolf's attack on the daily press briefings by Trump spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders that drew the most post-dinner comment.

Ms. Navarro took a swipe at "hypocritical" people who were offended by Ms. Wolf but defend Mr. Trump in a follow-up tweet.

Sanders, seated to Wolf's left, scowled, giving no indication she planned to be a good sport as the night's most visible representative of the administration. Wolf set it up brilliantly, telling Sanders (who remained sitting next to her on the head table for the duration), "I loved you as Aunt Lydia in The Handmaid's Tale". Teasing a run that never materialized in 2012, he promises the crowd, "You will have the great pleasure of voting for the man that will easily go down as the greatest president in the history of the United States: Me".

It's out of bounds to mock how Sarah Sanders' looks and call her an "Uncle Tom" for women, to advocate for Kellyanne Conway to be pinned under a tree and to compare the contributions of Ivanka Trump to that of an empty box of tampons. "I wouldn't change a single word that I said", Wolf said in an interview set to air Tuesday. Ms. Wolf suggested Ms. Sanders burns facts and uses the ashes to create ideal eye makeup.

Fox News correspondent Ed Henry, a past president of the association, says he wants the association to apologize to Sanders.

"It was disgusting, despicable", said Henry.

In one Twitter exchange, ex-White House press secretary Sean Spicer described the dinner as "a disgrace", netting about 4,000 retweets. He added, "It doesn't help what you're trying to achieve and what, I think, all of us are trying to achieve".

Wolf said Conway "has the flawless last name for what she does: Con-way", and also directly called her a liar. The New York Times' Maggie Haberman wrote that it was "impressive" that Sanders didn't walk out. And Wolf is right: Sanders really does lie a lot.

In that statement, the organization's president scolded Wolf for failing to reflect "a unifying message about our common commitment to a vigorous and free press while honoring civility, great reporting and scholarship winners, not to divide people". "Unfortunately, the entertainer's monologue was not in the spirit of that mission". As New Yorker writer Emily Nussbaum tweeted, "The more I think about it, the more impressed I am that Michelle Wolf did such a harsh act WITHOUT insulting any woman's looks".

-"He wants to give teachers guns, and I support that because then they can sell them for things they need like supplies". "So just know when you call her filthy, you... are right". That's not to suggest that news gatherers can't have cordial and polite relationships with those they cover, it's just foolish to be caught up in the pageantry of a televised dinner with them.

But we're now in a "much more serious environment" she said, "and to kind of not go after the big issues and just have a little fun in the room seemed just not as exciting to me".
