Addressing demonstrators on Yerevan's Republic Square, Pashinyan said he would meet with lawmakers on Monday and called for his supporters to refrain from acts of civil disobediance.

"Pashinyan was nominated as a candidate for Armenia's prime minister at a meeting of the Elk faction", Elk faction member Edmon Marukyan told reporters.

The parliamentarian expressed confidence that all the lawmakers anxious about the fate of the country would vote for Pashinyan.

Pashinyan, who is the leader of the protests that ousted Sargsyan, insisted that the political parties in the parliament should vote for him as the next interim prime minister before new snap elections.

He added that there are no two opinions in Armenia that the rhetoric coming from Azerbaijan is not conducive to solving the issue. The ruling Republican Party has not nominated its candidate. The Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) also indicated it is very likely to support Pashinyan.

"We need an atmosphere of peace to establish peace", he said.

The Prosperous Armenia Party, which holds 31 seats, threw its weight behind Pashinyan on Saturday. With the Republican Party's 58 seats in the 105-seat parliament, Pashinian is unlikely to be elected without their support. The protests were initially limited to opposing former president Serzh Sargsyan's appointment as Prime Minister, but their demands have now expanded to include a new government from outside the ruling Republican Party, and new elections to be held under a new electoral code.

On Friday and Saturday, Pashinyan received a hero's welcome in a number of towns and villages outside the capital as he drove around the landlocked ex-Soviet state with his supporters in a convoy.

Russian border guards patrol Armenia's border with Turkey and Iran.

With the selection scheduled for Tuesday, Nikol Pashinian so far is the only candidate formally nominated for the prime minister's post.
