All Blacks Sevens finish fifth in Singapore

Kenya's Jeffery Oluoch is tackled by Fiji's Paula Dranisinukula and Jerry Tuwai

Having started the latest HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournament with victory over Kenya, they followed that up with a 19-14 win over the United States before their Pool B finale against France (12.22 BST).

A third Fiji try after half-time from Jerry Tuwai looked to have put the islanders out of sight, but Australia fought back valiantly once again, Brandon Quinn and John Porch putting them 22-21 in front before the post-buzzer drama.

But Australia finally got their hands on more of the ball and five-pointers to Dylan Pietsch and Maurice Longbottom got them back in touch, trailing 14-10 at halftime.

Fiji had arrived in Singapore looking for a third consecutive Sevens victory after winning the Vancouver and Hong Kong legs of the challenge.

"Australia are a very good side and took us to the wire".

Fiji started the match brightly, charging ahead 14-0 after a brace of tries by Waisea Nacuqu, which were complemented by successful conversions.

"Winning this tournament will boost our morale going to London and Paris".

The penultimate tournament is in London from June 2-3 before the series ends in Paris between June 9-10.

In the dying seconds of last night's Singapore Sevens final at the National Stadium, Fiji turned defeat into victory, thanks to Alasio Sovita Naduva, who used his blistering pace to tip the game in their favour.

Two wins and a loss in Pool B saw Shujaa qualify for the Main Cup Quarter Finals in Singapore.

Australia topped their group with victories over New Zealand, Wales and Scotland on Saturday and then edged out Spain 7-5 in their quarter-final on Sunday. South Africa led 17-0 at half time.

Injera grounded the second try for Kenya and his 260th in the World Rugby Sevens Series, but it could not stop the South Africans from sailing through to the last four.

South Africa had earlier opened a 10 point lead, through Muller du Plessis and Cecil Afrika, but Simon Amor's side responded with 19 unanswered points thanks to tries from Charlie Hayter, Ruaridh McConnochie and Tom Mitchell before the end of the first half.
