Amateur online video showed heavy gunfire in the capital's Khozama district, triggering chances of political unrest in the country.

Saudi activists on the social media also called into question the Saudi government's story, saying that no toy drone was involved as there are no video footages showing the downing of the toy drone.

Saudi Arabia claims to have intercepted a lot of them.

Confusion erupted on Saturday following reports of heavy gunfire near the Royal Palace in Saudi Arabia.

No casualties were reported in the incident, a senior Saudi official told Reuters, noting King Salman was not present in the palace at the time.

"The king was at his farm in Diriya", the official said, naming another area of the capital.

The kingdom's interior ministry instructed drone enthusiasts to obtain permissions to fly the devices until regulations were finalised, noting a law for the use of drones was in its final stage.

Amid the vast program of reform that has been spurred by Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, sports authorities started granting licences for women's gyms to encourage Saudi women to embrace healthier lifestyles.

In October 2017, a gunman drove up to a gate of the king's palace in the Red Sea city of Jeddah and opened fire, killing at least two security guards and wounding three others before being shot dead. Prominent clerics have also been detained in an apparent bid to silence dissent. But they have also fueled speculation about a possible backlash against the crown prince, who remains popular with Saudi Arabia's burgeoning youth population.MBS returned earlier this month from a foreign tour that included the United States, where he sought investments and support to curb Iranian influence in the region.
