Rosenstein said to tell Trump he's not target in Mueller probe

Deja vu: Elite criminals go scot-free!

The violation was apparently outside the scope of Mueller's assignment, but it was serious enough for him to bring it to the attention ofDeputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein (a Republican, appointed by Trump).

Sessions's message to the White House, which has not previously been reported, underscores the political firestorm that Trump would invite should he attempt to remove the deputy attorney general.

Trump's fury toward Rosenstein reached its apex last week after it surfaced that Rosenstein had greenlit the FBI's decision to raid the personal property of Trump's longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen.

While Trump has made Sessions a regular public punching bag, attacking him on multiple occasions, such a resignation would risk plunging the White House into crisis.

The Post reported that Sessions called McGahn to ask about details of an April 12 meeting between Trump and Rosenstein. A source told the Post that Sessions said he was relieved to hear that the meeting was "largely cordial".

Rosenstein's status remains uncertain, but the pressure he is facing seemed to subside after last week. He will likely face a new challenge in coming weeks, as former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani takes over as Trump's attorney tasked with negotiating a swift end to the Mueller probe.

A senior administration official said Sessions does not like the way Rosenstein has been treated by the president and had expressed such concerns for months.

But while the threat of firing has been long held over Sessions' head, it has not come to pass - even as numerous Cabinet officials and White House staff have either resigned or been ousted.

Trump reportedly refers to Sessions as "Mr. Magoo", after the bumbling cartoon character.

We already knew Trump hadn't been a target of the probe - as least as of last month, when special counsel Robert S. Mueller III told Trump the same thing, according to previous Post reporting. His base, which is maybe 30% of the country, will stick with him (hell, he could rape a 5 year old on national television while wearing an "I love Satan" t-shirt and they would rationalize it away), but no one else would.

But a new report out Friday at Axios makes clear Rosenstein is not safe.

"As it relates to the DOJ investigation specifically, the statement, if proved by evidence, does help a possible future case against him for obstruction because it shows that at least part of why he does whatever he does regarding the investigation is about doing what is best to protect him", former federal prosecutor Patrick Cotter said.

Instantly after the raid, Trump described Periods' determination in early 2017 to recuse himself from investigations related to Russian Federation and the Trump marketing campaign as a "horrible mistake for the nation".
